Learning to defend at the last moment

Just Defended rewards blocking at the last moment, giving defence an active rhythm. Breaking lets certain special moves stop early, opening room for a follow-up. These systems make short exchanges worth revisiting: an attack you have learned to avoid may become an opportunity once its timing is familiar. The smaller roster is a manageable place to study those relationships.

Use a training mode when the edition supplies one. Work on ordinary blocking first, then attempt Just Defended against a predictable attack. Breaking is easier to understand by repeating one eligible move than by trying to learn a complete combo list at once.

A 1999 arcade game, a 2000 home cartridge

Garou moved Fatal Fury to a new generation of characters around Rock Howard, retaining Terry Bogard. It also dropped the earlier sway-line system. The arcade debut was in 1999, while SNK records the Japanese AES cartridge in 2000. That home date makes it a particularly clear example of the Neo Geo’s life beyond the conventional 16-bit period.

Why we chose it for Neo Geo AES

Precise defensive timing and cancellable moves show the hardware’s fighting games still developing at the turn of the century.
