An island within a budget

Utopia gives spending an opportunity cost. Money put into a boat cannot also build housing, and attention spent steering it leaves less time to respond elsewhere. Weather crosses the islands without regard for a carefully arranged budget. With another player beside you, the shared view makes prosperity and trouble public: an investment can be judged against the rival island as well as your own needs. The pressure comes from fitting decisions into the round rather than following a long research tree.

A different console evening

Don Daglow’s design brings management and direct competition to a console often remembered for sports. The Blue Sky Rangers release record places Utopia in June 1982. The archive uses that release year rather than treating its earlier copyright as proof that buyers had the cartridge in 1981. Its importance here lies in the different pace and subject it offers alongside Mattel’s action games.

Read the cost and scoring sections before starting. The manual allows one-player practice as well as two-player competition, and lets players choose round settings. Start with a short match, then compare what each spending choice actually contributed. A second player makes the competing priorities easier to see.

Why we chose it for Intellivision

Island management shows how far console play could extend beyond sport and shooting, especially with a second player sharing the screen.
