An army of individuals

A strong unit can draw an enemy forward, but leaving a weaker companion within reach may cost more than the trap gains. Weapon matchups, terrain and individual growth make those calculations personal: the army consists of people you have trained, not replacements bought next turn. Battle animations give a successful attack weight without obscuring the grid that produced it. The introductory campaign teaches patiently, sometimes too patiently for an experienced strategy player. Later maps make careful positioning matter, especially when several opponents can attack the same vulnerable unit.

Check the whole enemy group’s reach before moving a fragile character. Decide how you want to handle fallen units before a difficult map: accepting losses and restarting both produce different experiences of the campaign. Keep an eye on weapon durability as well as health.

Which Fire Emblem?

Released as Fire Emblem in the West, the 2003 game now identified as The Blazing Blade introduced the series outside Japan. Lyn, Eliwood and Hector lead a story in which recruitment and survival shape the army available for later battles. Its training chapters make that demanding structure approachable without removing the consequences of losses.

Why we chose it for Game Boy Advance

Plan around individual soldiers whose survival matters beyond the current map.
