Looking after the whole party
Protecting a fragile caster is easier to care about when you have spent time with them outside battle. Shining Force II gives its units faces and makes room for town exploration between encounters. The tactical decisions remain readable, with enough time to consider where a companion belongs and who will be left exposed when they move.
A good first tactical RPG if leisurely turns appeal to you. Weaker units need attention; concentrating every victory in one fighter can leave the rest of the party struggling. Save between battles and leave enough time to finish an encounter.
Sonic Co.’s crowded schedule
The sequel reached Japan in 1993, developed by Sonic Co., also known as Sonic! Software Planning. Contemporary interviews describe work on it alongside the Shining Force Gaiden games. Its measured battles add a different pace to the Mega Drive library and to this selection.
Why we chose it for Mega Drive
The tactical battles are easy to read, and the companions give you reasons to care about keeping weaker units involved.
