A cast worth keeping together
Each character’s battle command helps distinguish them before the story has explained much. Later, a short scene can make that familiar figure matter in a different way. The score holds the game together when the party scatters, and the uneasy combination of machinery and magic gives the world its character. Some of the most effective scenes concern one person’s loss, with the larger conflict left temporarily outside the room.
VI in Japan, III in North America
Final Fantasy VI was released in 1994 and sold in North America as Final Fantasy III. Check that numbering when identifying an original cartridge. Its large cast and theatrical scenes show how much narrative work the SNES could carry through text and music, without recorded dialogue or disc-based video.
Let the party take shape
Random encounters and older menus can slow the opening hours. Let the characters’ individual abilities suggest how to use them before trying to optimise the whole party. Translation changes and later revisions affect the tone, so the edition is worth noting when discussing a particular scene.
Why we chose it for Super Nintendo
A large cast is given individual work to do, both in combat and in the story. Its quieter scenes deserve as much attention as the opera.
