The game Europe missed

Mother 2 was released in Japan in 1994, followed by the North American EarthBound in 1995. There was no original European SNES release. Later official editions allowed European players to encounter a game missing from their local cartridge shelves.

An RPG close to home

EarthBound changes the furniture of the role-playing game. Neighbourhood shops and buses make the world recognisable before peculiar enemies push it off balance. Deadpan dialogue lets the absurdity stand without explaining the joke. Underneath it is a feeling for childhood, when being confident enough to set out does not prevent you from wanting the reassurance of home.

The writing earns patience with some awkward inventory management and a rough early stretch of battles. Give its voice time to settle. A hint can help when progress stalls; wrestling with an obscure instruction does little for the humour.

Why we chose it for Super Nintendo

Its suburban setting gives the jokes somewhere familiar to land. The writing repays some patience with older RPG inconveniences.
