Build a chain from below

Working from below the board makes every clearing action physical. You move beneath a column, collect a colour and return it where it will form a match. Once chains begin, looking ahead becomes as important as moving quickly. The competitive game turns a tidy board into temporary breathing space, because another attack can disturb the arrangement you were preparing.

Start by making simple vertical matches and watching what falls into the gap. Add speed only when the next match is visible. Local competition works best when players are close enough in experience to have time to understand why a board collapsed.

Data East’s 1997 revision

Data East released Magical Drop III on MVS and Japanese AES in 1997. It revised the preceding game’s chain-based system and added Magical Journey mode. Including a puzzle game gives the Neo Geo selection a different kind of pressure: recognising useful arrangements quickly enough to act on them.

Why we chose it for Neo Geo AES

Pulling pieces down and returning them makes chain-building an active task, with competitive pressure from the other board.

Japanese releases are explicitly separated into MVS, home ROM cartridge and CD. AES years use the home-ROM row; the original game year uses the arcade row. The catalogue’s company column is labelled Publisher, so it is not a source for individual staff credits.
