Before the fighting-game years
This was part of the Neo Geo’s 1990 arcade launch group. SNK’s museum places the Japanese retail home cartridge in 1991, so the platform record differs from the game’s original year. Alpha Denshi’s contribution also matters: the early catalogue was built by more than SNK alone.
An early arcade challenge
Magician Lord gives its sorcerer large, threatening spaces to cross and enemies that demand attention before the next jump. The attraction is the fantasy setting and its conspicuous arcade presentation; the cost is a demanding pace that gives little room to recover from a mistake. Sampling an early section can be more revealing than forcing a complete clear.
Approach it as a difficult early arcade game. Lower the difficulty in a modern release if necessary and study the enemies around a troublesome jump. Its place in the collection is historical; the later games offer more welcoming starting points.
Why we chose it for Neo Geo AES
A demanding launch-era adventure shows the early catalogue before the later concentration on fighting games.

Japanese releases are explicitly separated into MVS, home ROM cartridge and CD. AES years use the home-ROM row; the original game year uses the arcade row. The catalogue’s company column is labelled Publisher, so it is not a source for individual staff credits.
