Heavy machinery, expressive soldiers

Metal Slug puts weight into familiar run-and-gun actions. Soldiers react visibly to danger, machinery shakes under fire, and climbing into the tank changes the scale of a confrontation. The expressive animation makes the battlefield worth watching, though watching is risky when bullets are coming from several directions. The weapons give a second player useful work to do without demanding a complicated division of roles.

Nazca’s two games

Nazca made both Metal Slug and Neo Turf Masters. Their different subjects show how much room there was within the Neo Geo’s arcade format. Both MVS and Japanese AES editions of Metal Slug arrived in 1996. In its August 1996 review, GamePro admired the action but criticised the six-mission length and occasional slowdown.

Make the next run count

Begin with a short run and learn where the next threat enters. Unlimited arcade credits can reveal the later scenes, but returning to an early stage with fewer mistakes gives the shooting a clearer purpose. Two players make a good introduction to the vehicle and weapon changes.

Why we chose it for Neo Geo AES

The expressive soldiers, changing weapons and small tank make a direct introduction to Neo Geo action.
