Playing to the audience

Choosing a move is only the start of a turn. A timed press can improve the attack, and the audience makes the battle feel like a performance that can go wrong. Partners matter outside combat too, opening routes and commenting on the places you visit. Repeated trips through familiar corridors can slow individual chapters, but the changing settings give each a recognisable comic premise.

Partners and paper

The Japanese GameCube release arrived in July 2004 and explicitly credits Intelligent Systems. Its paper effects do practical work: Mario’s altered shape becomes a way to move through scenery, rather than remaining an illustration style.

Learn the timing for a small set of attacks and defensive inputs. Talk to the active partner when a new location seems unremarkable; their observations often carry the scene.

Why we chose it for GameCube

Pair timed battles with partners who give the paper world character.
