The game comes with you
Game Boy launched in Japan on 21 April 1989. Its place in this chapter reflects that date and its handheld competitors; the machine itself uses an 8-bit processor.
Tetris, Mario and later Pokémon gave the same portable hardware very different uses. Puzzle rounds, platform stages and a collection of creatures could share a machine small enough to carry between places. The separate screen also released the player from the household television.

Working within four shades
The original display resolves 160 by 144 pixels in four shades. Readable silhouettes and clear separation between objects matter on a screen this small. Colour illustrations on a box cannot describe the experience of the original display.
The first model takes four AA batteries. Later Game Boy models changed the casing and display, so a photograph or battery specification needs a model name beside it. This profile describes the original machine.

Check the title as well as the platform: the listed Link’s Awakening DX is the later colour edition. The service is a convenient selection, rather than the entire original cartridge library. Catalogue access was checked on 27 October 2026.
