A handheld from Sega’s existing hardware

Game Gear arrived in Japan on 6 October 1990. Sega’s development retrospective describes a design derived from the Mark III and Master System, adapted for a colour LCD and portable controls.

That inheritance places it in Sega’s 8-bit hardware line even though it appears in this chapter’s 16-bit historical window. A Game Gear title needs its own release record; sharing a name with a Mega Drive game does not make it the same edition.

Six batteries behind the screen

Sega chose a horizontal case, with the controls on either side of the screen and the batteries distributed across the back. Its retrospective describes the effort to balance weight, strength and the cost of a colour display.

The backlight made play independent of ambient light, but the six AA batteries were a substantial part of carrying the machine. Sega’s retrospective gives roughly three to four hours on alkaline cells. That is a period estimate, not a promise about an ageing unit or modern replacement screen.

The television accessory

The optional TV tuner let the same display serve as a portable television. External power supplies and rechargeable packs extended the uses of the handheld while adding more equipment to carry.

These accessories explain part of Sega’s pitch for the screen. They do not turn the Game Gear into a portable Mega Drive: its cartridge format and software library remain separate.
