The time a whip takes
The whip reaches a useful distance, but only after Simon has begun the swing. A jumping enemy or a moving platform can therefore punish an attack that looked safe a moment earlier. Stairs narrow the choices further. Sub-weapons let you prepare a different answer, provided you have kept the right one. The castle’s difficulty is partly a test of observation and partly a demand to repeat hazards until their timing has become familiar.
Watch a moving threat for a cycle before stepping into range. Make deliberate use of sub-weapons instead of saving every heart for a hypothetical emergency. Replaying a short section can be satisfying; replaying half the castle after it stops teaching you anything is a good reason to use a save state.
From Disk Card to cartridge
Akumajō Dracula first appeared on the Japanese Disk System in 1986. Konami dates the NES version to 1987 in the US and 1988 in Europe. These releases precede the more elaborate routes and characters of Rondo of Blood: the original concentrates its action into a direct advance through the castle.
Why we chose it for NES / Famicom
Careful spacing gives a small move set considerable depth. Learn the timing before trying to hurry through the castle.
