The distance before the whip
A whip strike commits Richter to a position. That makes the space between an enemy and a staircase a problem to solve before jumping. The branching stages reward looking beyond the obvious exit, and rescuing Maria opens a much more agile way through them. Returning with another character changes the feel of a route you thought you understood.
Begin with Richter to learn the spacing. Maria is worth trying when available, especially if the deliberate jumps are discouraging. A guide can help locate alternate routes after an initial playthrough without turning the first visit into a checklist.
Castlevania on disc
This Japanese Super CD-ROM² release adds voiced scenes and recorded music to stage-based Castlevania. Its disc format matters: the original game needs more than a base HuCard console. It offers a useful comparison with the separate Mega Drive game, Bloodlines, released the following year.
Why we chose it for PC Engine
Deliberate attacks, alternate routes and two distinct characters make a castle worth revisiting. Check the Super CD-ROM² requirements for an original disc.
