Returning to Zebes

The 1994 game sends Samus back to Zebes, where equipment such as the Grapple Beam and X-Ray Scope changes how she can explore. It remains a useful reference for ability-gated world design. New movement options let the same rooms serve several purposes over the course of the game.

A corridor can feel hostile before anything attacks. New equipment gradually changes that relationship: a detail you once ignored becomes a route, then a shortcut you trust. The confidence is earned slowly. Super Metroid’s staged scenes work because so much of the time around them belongs to the player, looking for a way through and listening to an unpleasantly quiet room.

Remember the run button

Expect movement that feels different from recent action games, and remember the run button. Adjust the controls if necessary. Being briefly lost can help you learn the connections between areas; consult a route guide only as far as you need to get moving again.

Why we chose it for Super Nintendo

Zebes gradually becomes a place you know. New abilities change familiar rooms, making exploration and movement inseparable.
