The campaign and the service
The campaign changes weapons, vehicles and loyalties often enough to unsettle the comfortable rhythm of the first game. Dual wielding offers immediate firepower with trade-offs, and close-range fights can turn suddenly when a vehicle changes hands. The ending leaves the larger conflict unresolved. Its multiplayer history matters, but that history should not disguise the difference between playing the surviving campaign and experiencing the original online service.
Bungie announced the November 2004 release with campaign and multiplayer together. Halo 2 placed Xbox Live at the centre of its competitive experience; Microsoft ended original Xbox Live support in April 2010.
What the disc retains
Begin with the campaign or local multiplayer. Treat recollections of the original matchmaking community as historical evidence, rather than features an original disc can recreate by itself.
Why we chose it for Xbox
Play the campaign while distinguishing its surviving modes from its original online history.
