The saved game stays in the box
The standard hard disk made persistent storage part of every Xbox. Microsoft also promoted copying music CDs to it. Ethernet was built in too, but a socket was not the same as an online service: Xbox launched in North America in November 2001, a year before Xbox Live’s retail introduction there.
DVD movie playback required a separate receiver and remote. That distinction separates reading a DVD game from acting as a film player, and stops the specification sheet from promising a feature an incomplete used console may not provide.

A subscription joins the machines
The US and Canadian Xbox Live launch on 15 November 2002 bundled a year’s subscription, a headset and trial software. Broadband was required. Microsoft presented the games as part of one service, with communication and finding opponents extending beyond an individual match.
This adds a different kind of dependency to a collection. A disc, controller and functioning console can preserve an offline campaign, while an online match also depends on the surrounding service. Original Xbox Live was discontinued in April 2010; later compatibility cannot by itself restore it.

A library beyond its launch game
Halo is an obvious entrance, but the collection should not stop there. Panzer Dragoon Orta puts the route under the game’s control; Jet Set Radio Future lets you work out how rails and ramps connect. Both bring Sega design traditions to another manufacturer’s machine.
Knights of the Old Republic shifts attention to party choices and dialogue. Ninja Gaiden Black asks for a much faster judgement of distance and recovery. These games offer different reasons to learn the controller, so the ranked list mixes sustained adventures with shorter challenges.

An original edition needs its own route
The game features distinguish the original Xbox disc from later PC versions, revisions and remasters. Check the exact title before treating a similarly named modern release as a substitute. A backwards-compatible edition also needs title-specific support; it is not a promise that the whole library works.
Offline and local multiplayer modes remain distinct from Xbox Live. Unofficial replacement services are separate projects with their own compatibility and setup requirements. They have not been tested for this chapter and are not presented as continued Microsoft support.
