Another use for the television
Sony’s retrospective emphasises DVD playback as part of the console’s appeal. A household could buy games and watch films through the same box. That matters when comparing it with the small game discs of GameCube or Xbox’s separately enabled DVD movie function.
The software also used more than one physical format. A PlayStation 2 game could be supplied on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM; the console’s association with DVD should not turn every entry in its catalogue into a DVD release. Original PlayStation disc compatibility provided another connection to the earlier library.

What fills the space?
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City fills its streets with traffic and opportunities to interrupt the journey. Shadow of the Colossus gives the ride to a distant opponent much of its weight through quiet space. The contrast is more useful than treating a larger map as automatic progress.
Katamari Damacy offers another measure of scale: an object becomes collectible when the ball has grown enough to absorb it. Ico builds its spaces around escorting another person. The selection treats these as different design answers, with room for compact experiments beside long adventures.

A network port arrives in the case
Earlier systems used a separate Network Adaptor. The smaller design announced in September 2004 integrated Ethernet, with a November introduction. Sony also specified a modem connection on the North American variants. A shared PS2 name therefore does not mean identical sockets or accessory support.
Sony sold a revised multitap for the slim machine because the older accessory would not fit. When assembling an original setup, the model number matters alongside the game region. Network hardware should likewise be checked against the particular game and its present service arrangements.
