Instructions and intrusions

The navigation computer usually supplies a destination, but the route there keeps changing. A blocked corridor or broken piece of machinery turns an apparently routine assignment into a search through the station’s walls. The SA-X makes that uncertainty threatening: recognising Samus’s old armour is a reason to hide while her weakened body recovers its abilities. Boss fights demand more exact movement than the briefing-led structure might suggest. The result is tightly paced, although repeated instructions leave less room for getting lost than Super Metroid.

Surviving the station

Listen to the briefings, then look for changes between visits to familiar rooms. During a pursuit, concentrate on the next safe route rather than treating every enemy as a fight to win. Leave exhaustive item hunting until you understand the station.

Fusion follows the earlier adventures with a new story about the X parasite and a compromised research station. Its 2002 European GBA release shares a year with Metroid Prime, but the two games approach exploration differently. Here, instructions and interruptions are part of how the station’s apparent order breaks down.

Why we chose it for Game Boy Advance
