Beyond Super CD-ROM²

Released in Japan in 1995, Sapphire requires Arcade Card expansion memory on original hardware. A Super CD-ROM² setup alone is insufficient. It represents a further branch of the PC Engine library, beyond the Super System Card requirements of Rondo of Blood.

Release the fire button

Four pilots offer different ways into the shooting. Coloured pickups change the weapon, while letting the supporting units charge gives you a reason to release the fire button. That pause is an interesting demand in a game that otherwise encourages constant shooting: the stronger follow-up has to justify the brief exposure.

Sample each pilot and practise the charged supporting attack before attempting a long run. The hardware history makes it worth seeing, but buying an elaborate original setup is a separate decision from whether you enjoy its shooting.

Why we chose it for PC Engine

A late Arcade Card release completes the comparison of the platform’s media branches. Start with an available reissue before considering original hardware.
