South Island by another route
This Sonic benefits from looking before you leap. The bridges and jungle platforms make you judge gaps and landings, with fewer opportunities to let momentum do the work. The scenery is cheerful, but the boss encounters remove your ring protection and ask for clean execution. That shift makes each act’s finish feel like a separate challenge instead of another stretch of running.
Start with the Master System version if you want to see more of the terrain ahead. Slow down at unfamiliar gaps and learn the boss pattern before jumping towards it. Knowing the Mega Drive game is no substitute for learning these levels.
The name on two different games
Ancient’s 1991 8-bit game shares its title and premise with the Mega Drive release while building a different set of stages. Sega identifies Bridge and Jungle among its additions, with new music by Yuzo Koshiro. The Game Gear adaptation also changes the visible play area. This record keeps the 8-bit work separate from the Mega Drive series entries.
Why we chose it for Master System
The Master System’s separate stages make this a useful companion to the Mega Drive games, with more room to inspect than the handheld edition.
