One idea around the next corner

A level can introduce a single troublesome idea and finish before it wears out: a platform that sinks, a sun that swoops, a familiar enemy suddenly larger than Mario. The map gives those brief encounters a sense of travel. Choosing when to spend a stored item matters, particularly when a tail could reveal a route above the visible level. The airships change the tempo again, carrying the screen forward while you negotiate the machinery.

Keep a first trip to the main routes; warp whistles can wait. Try taking an unfamiliar suit into a stage instead of hoarding everything. A save point between worlds makes the original cartridge design easier to fit around shorter sessions.

Three regional calendars

Japan received the game in 1988, North America in 1990 and Europe in 1991. That spread places the same game at different points in each region’s transition to newer hardware. Its inventory and world map broaden the decisions between stages, while running and jumping still do most of the work within them.

Why we chose it for NES / Famicom

Short, varied stages and a world map make this the strongest first tour of Nintendo’s platform games on the hardware.
