Building a map of Hyrule

Hyrule becomes manageable a screen at a time. A safe cave, a shop you cannot yet afford and a dungeon entrance give an otherwise hostile landscape a personal geography. Sword combat asks for care because reaching the next discovery with a little health left is valuable. Some concealed entrances are too arbitrary to discover pleasantly without help; the pleasure of finding a route coexists with stretches of exhaustive searching.

The booklet beside the game

The Japanese original launched on Disk System in 1986; the European NES cartridge followed in 1987. In Nintendo’s 2016 interview, Shigeru Miyamoto recalls supplying a booklet and, for North America, a map with hints. Reading supporting material was part of the intended experience, even if modern presentations make it easy to begin without it.

Make a rough map and note caves before consulting a complete walkthrough. Use a hint when exploration turns into checking every possible wall. If you know A Link to the Past, expect fewer directions and more uncertainty about where to go next.

Why we chose it for NES / Famicom

Explore with a notebook and occasional hints. Its discoveries reward attention, though some concealed entrances remain needlessly obscure.
