Read the water
A wave can lift the craft just as a turn needs to begin. Steering therefore involves reading the surface as well as the route. The buoy rules keep that movement purposeful: missing the required side has a consequence even if the shortcut looks quicker. Each rider’s handling gives another reason to repeat a course, and a clean passage through rough water feels earned.
Try the riders before settling on one and learn the buoy colours. Make the first goal a clean circuit. More speed is useful only when the craft remains positioned for the next turn.
Before the rumble revision
The Japanese original arrived in September 1996. Nintendo’s site gives the behaviour of the waves a central place in its description. This recommendation records that initial edition; a later Japanese revision added Rumble Pak support, which should not be attributed automatically to every cartridge.
Why we chose it for Nintendo 64
The water keeps a familiar corner from becoming an entirely fixed problem.
