A familiar room, another century
Returning to a location in another period lets recognition do some of the frightening work. The sanity effects then disturb assumptions about what the screen is telling you. Their surprise is strongest before you know the catalogue of tricks, while the recurring spaces and spells give a second reading a different interest. The combat is more deliberate than frightening once its targeting becomes familiar.
The 2002 GameCube release uses several protagonists and historical settings within a connected horror story. Its sanity system reaches beyond the character’s immediate surroundings and makes presentation part of the uncertainty.
Leave the surprises intact
Avoid a list of the sanity effects before playing. Take time to understand targeting and spell construction; both make it easier to follow the story without fighting the controls.
