Finding room in the fight

The separate planes give a crowded fight places to escape to. Moving out of an attack’s path is often more useful than adding another strike to the confusion. Magic and large groups make the screen busy, yet the lane structure provides a way to recover your bearings. The branching story gives a second run a purpose beyond raising a damage statistic.

Learn to change planes deliberately before bringing a second player into the busiest fights. Try characters with different ranges, since a magic user and a close fighter ask for different positions. The visual commotion is part of the appeal, but it can obscure an unfamiliar move.

Sprites in the 3D chapter

Guardian Heroes puts an action RPG structure around a side-scrolling brawler on Saturn in 1996. Its place in this chapter challenges the assumption that a newer console required every game to abandon sprites. The same machine hosting Virtua Fighter 2 could also make a dense, illustrated melee its main attraction.

Why we chose it for Saturn

Changing fighting planes gives the illustrated brawl a spatial problem of its own.
