Two people, one kart
Pairing characters gives item choice a place before the starting signal. In cooperative play the division between steering and items lets two people share responsibility for one result, including its mistakes. Compact tracks make that relationship easy to follow; Baby Park’s repeated turns turn the field into a knot of overlapping threats. The team system matters more than simply adding another set of racers.
Try sharing a kart as well as racing separately. Agree when to swap roles and give a newcomer time with both controls before increasing the engine class.
A room full of racers
The 2003 GameCube entry builds its racing around two characters per kart. Its local play and optional LAN support show another meaning of connected play: several people and machines in the same room.
