The race and the map

The upper screen asks you to judge the next bend; the lower one supplies information about the trouble approaching it. That division makes a quick glance useful without turning steering into a touch exercise. The mission mode gives solo players small tasks beyond another cup victory, while the mixture of old and new tracks invites comparison. Items can still overturn a careful lap, so time trials provide a better place to measure improvements in your driving.

Learn a short course in time trial before raising the race class. Try the missions between cups, and use the map to watch an approaching opponent rather than staring at it through a corner.

After the online service

The 2005 DS entry brought an online mode to Mario Kart alongside local wireless races. Its historical importance survives the closure of that service, but so do substantial solo modes. The later Wii U release is a separate adaptation: Nintendo explicitly excludes the original wireless features from it.

Why we chose it for Nintendo DS

Compare tight solo missions, racing lines and local competition while using the second-screen map.
