Point to the thing you mean

Nintendo DS reached North America before Japan: 21 November and 2 December 2004 respectively, followed by Europe in March 2005. Its defining hardware choice was the lower touch screen. A player could point directly at an object or draw a line while the upper display remained available for another view.

The microphone added another input alongside the buttons. Mario Party DS later used those alternatives within one cartridge: turning a crank on the touch screen, steering with the directional pad and blowing out candles. The interesting comparison is what a game asks the hands and voice to do, rather than how many inputs a specification can list.

One card can start a group

Wireless communication removed the cable between nearby systems. Nintendo also included PictoChat, an application for exchanging written messages and drawings. These local connections belong to the machine’s history alongside its later internet services.

DS Download Play let supporting games send playable data to other handhelds. Mario Party DS offers a concrete example: up to four players can share a single card. Other games set their own limits, so the card count and available modes should be checked per title.

DS Lite and DSi keep different promises

The original DS and the smaller DS Lite have a GBA cartridge slot. It supports GBA single-player games, not Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridges, and there is no GBA link-cable multiplayer. Wireless DS play cannot restore a connection the older game was written to make through a cable.

DSi and DSi XL omit that slot. As well as excluding GBA games, this prevents use of DS games and accessories that require it. A later model is therefore not automatically the most complete way to play the whole DS library.

Local play and a closed service

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection supplied online functions for supporting DS games. Nintendo ended that service on 20 May 2014, removing features such as online matchmaking and exchanges in affected games. Its notice explicitly distinguishes those functions from offline play.

A working cartridge can still contain a local game even when its original online service has ended. Check its modes separately: single-player, nearby wireless and internet play are different requirements. The closure notice was checked on 28 October 2026; community replacement services are outside this profile’s verification.
