A screen for games and films
The PSP-1000 placed a 4.3-inch widescreen between familiar PlayStation buttons and an analogue control. Its UMD drive gave Sony a portable optical format, while a Memory Stick slot supported stored content. Games, video and music shared one device.
This layout offered a different starting point from Nintendo DS. The PSP concentrated attention on one wide image; the DS divided it across two screens and let the player touch one of them. Those choices matter when examining how a game presents space and accepts input.

Three introductions across two years
Sony’s contemporary announcement gives 12 December 2004 for Japan. The later PlayStation history page instead prints 11 December; this profile retains the contemporary date and records the discrepancy rather than silently combining the two accounts.
The North American introduction followed on 24 March 2005, with Europe on 1 September. A Japanese launch game and a later European release therefore need separate edition records. The hardware’s name alone does not establish when a particular library was available in each market.

Nearby players and internet connections
The original PSP’s wireless hardware offered ad hoc connections between nearby systems and infrastructure connections through an access point. Supported multiplayer modes remain a property of the game; a radio specification is not a universal player count.
An original network feature also depends on the service behind it. Check a game’s local and online modes separately when choosing how to play today. The original PSP-1000 specification should not be read as a list of features shared by every later PSP model.

Removing the drive changes the library
In 2009 Sony announced PSP go, replacing the UMD drive with 16 GB of flash memory. It was sold alongside the PSP-3000. The change created a practical distinction that survives the hardware’s retail life: a PSP go cannot read a UMD collection.
PlayStation’s support notice records the PSP store’s closure in 2016 and the end of remaining searches and in-game purchases on 6 July 2021. It still describes downloading previously purchased content through the device’s Download List. That documented route was checked on 28 October 2026; it has not been tested with a device or account here.
For an existing UMD, choose a working model with the drive. For a digital purchase, establish the account’s entitlement and download route before assuming the software is available. A later remake or subscription edition needs a separate comparison with the original PSP release.
