Two people, two screens
Neku’s attacks depend on the pins you equip and the gestures they accept. His partner occupies the other screen, where a different input rhythm competes for your attention. Early fights can feel crowded; learning to shift focus makes the partnership tangible. Clothing and street fashion become combat considerations, giving the shops a purpose beyond buying the next numerical upgrade. Its demanding controls reward experimentation, though they also make this a poor choice for distracted play.
Learning the partnership
Begin with a small set of pins whose gestures you can distinguish reliably. Change an awkward combination before assuming you need faster hands. Spend time understanding the partner’s controls instead of treating the upper display as scenery.
The Japanese DS release dates to 2007, followed by Europe in 2008. Jupiter’s portfolio records its development contribution alongside Square Enix. The original uses the handheld’s separate displays for simultaneous action, a distinction that matters when comparing later single-screen adaptations.
Why we chose it for Nintendo DS
