Finding the line

The road rotates beneath the kart, so reading the shape of the next corner matters more than judging a distant hill. Steering can feel slippery until a short hop and an early line become part of the rhythm. Coins create small decisions within that line: a slightly wider bend can improve the run if it avoids an expensive collision. Items interrupt the order, but time trials expose how much control a familiar track allows. It is a useful bridge from Super Mario Kart’s compact courses to the wider possibilities of handheld multiplayer.

Begin with a lower engine class and practise a course without relying on items. Try turning earlier than you would in a later 3D Mario Kart. For multiplayer, check the cartridge count and cable requirements of the mode you intend to play.

A screen for every racer

Intelligent Systems developed this first handheld Mario Kart, released in Japan in July 2001 as Mario Kart Advance. Its original single-cartridge and multi-cartridge modes let players race with their own screens, with different content limits. That cable-based arrangement is distinct from the wireless connections used by later Nintendo handhelds.
