An RPG that circles its opponent
A battle is a moving relationship with one enemy rather than two motionless ranks. Circling can expose a weak point or carry the dragon towards a more dangerous attack. Waiting for another action gauge competes with the need to act now. The resulting rhythm gives the dragon’s movement a tactical meaning, while the quieter stretches on foot give the surrounding world a different scale.
The 1998 reception
Released as Azel: Panzer Dragoon RPG in Japan in 1998, Saga moves the series from guided shooting into an RPG. In his contemporary GameSpot review, James Mielke praised the battle system and visual design while noting rough textures, occasional stuttering and a length he found limiting.
Beginning the journey
Give the battle tutorial time to explain position and the gauges. This is the stronger choice when the setting of Zwei interests you more than repeated shooting runs. Avoid a complete walkthrough initially; discovering how a new enemy changes the available positions is part of the work.
Why we chose it for Saturn
Circling the opponent gives its RPG combat a different shape from a conventional line of party members.
