Measuring the jump

Walking to an edge, stepping back and committing to a running jump makes distance tangible. The movement asks for preparation, which can initially feel heavy beside a modern adventure. Once the grid of the world becomes readable, the same precision makes a difficult crossing satisfying. Combat is a less persuasive interruption than the rooms themselves, where a ledge above the camera can change your idea of the route.

Use the opening training space and learn the walk, hop-back and grab actions. Rushing through the controls makes later rooms feel arbitrary. The original movement is worth understanding even if you choose a remaster for its saving and display conveniences.

One adventure, several editions

Core Design’s first Tomb Raider dates to 1996. This shared feature covers PlayStation and Saturn editions rather than treating a port as another game. Sega’s catalogue dates the Japanese Saturn release, titled Tomb Raiders, to 1997. That is a regional delay, not a correction of the underlying game’s debut year.

Why we chose it for Saturn

The Saturn edition provides a useful comparison with PlayStation. The documented Japanese release follows in 1997.
