The map before the battle

The campaign asks where to send a force and which territory you can leave exposed; the battle that follows asks which troops to field and when to unleash a commander’s ability. Watching the armies collide is satisfying, and learning how a local victory shifts the whole map keeps you playing.

A strategy game built for long campaigns, it came to Saturn in 1996. Sega later adapted it for PlayStation 2, a different version, and the Japanese edition and Working Designs’ English localisation differ in writing and presentation.

Learn to reinforce a position before expanding quickly, and give the campaign time: early decisions take a while to show their consequences.
